Introduction to Basic Printmaking Techniques

Introduction to basic printmaking techniques without the use of a press. Students will be shown how to use a range of basic printmaking techniques to create effective and interesting prints. i.e. direct prints, mono-prints, relief print and screen prints using stencils (not photo exposure). The museum collections will also be used as a starting point for subject ideas.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to some basic printmaking techniques without the use of a press.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use basic printmaking equipment correctly
  • Experiment with different methods to produce mono-prints
  • Create relief prints from a polystyrene block
  • Produce screen prints using a stencil
  • Understand how to line up multiple layer prints accurately using`registration’

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please wear old clothes & practical footwear as print-making can be messy. A sketchbook is useful to collect visual ideas; sketches, photos, cuttings as well as ideas from the museum collections.
