We will discover the genius of Vincent van Gogh through looking at his writings, his inner motivations and how he came to create an "art of the soul" that has had implications for all artists since his life time.The two days will be a synthesis of art appreciation and practical art to enliven the heart and mind with the powers of light and the force of nature.Suitable for the art lover, the observer of nature and the practicing artist, whether beginner, intermediate or experienced. Bring your usual painting equipment if you have painted before and a packed lunch. A basic range of materials will be provided.Reference material provided.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to study Vincent's background and where he fits in to the art of his time.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Begin to understand, through looking at Van Gogh's life, his fascination with Nature's "field of force" and how, through the inner "soul" of the artist, this translates into a work of art.
  • Experience the emotional power of yellow.
  • Draw with vitality.
  • Discover your passion for art making.
  • Create artworks inspired by Vincent van Gogh

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources
