Explore your creativity! Whether you are hoping to open up your writing potential or already experienced and keen to expand your repertoire further within a structured programme, this course could be just up your street. Sessions will be tailored to introduce diverse writing prompts and examples, generate group discussion and develop a receptive reading of each others' work under tutor guidance. By the end of the course, you should possess a more confident grasp of different writing styles, have created some significant new pieces of your own work, and learnt to give and receive critical feedback within a friendly, supportive environment of fellow creative writers.

Course aim

This course is designed to help beginner and inter-mediate creative writers to respond to starter writing prompts in a variety of genres and develop an ability to evaluate critically and supportively the work created within the group.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • By the end of the course you should have compiled a small portfolio of writing responses in a variety of genres.
  • You will have engaged with a structured introduction to the disciplines of producing weekly writing responses.
  • You will have learnt to evaluate both your work and the work of others in a sympathetic and positive way.
  • You will have expanded your repertoire of contact with influential excerpts of literature studied in class.
  • Hopefully you will feel more confident about working independently in your chosen writing areas.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • I am also happy to give one-on-one critical advice and support for writing projects, including supplying critiques designed to help students appraise and edit their work.

  • All materials will be provided
