This course will look at the beliefs and practices of the worlds fastest growing religion. Why is the Prophet Muhammad known as 'The Seal of the Prophets?' Is the Qur'an the only source of authority? Why is modesty in dress and living a halal lifestyle so important? What is the role of women in Islam? To discover the answers to these questions and explore many more areas of this Abrahamic faith, join us for an exploration into Islam.

Course aim

This course will look at the beliefs and practices of the worlds fastest growing religion. Who was the Prophet Muhammad? Is the Qur'an the only source of authority? Why is modesty so important? What is the role of women in Islam?

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand that Islam has a number of sources of authority
  • Understand the concept of the Ummah and the importance of family life
  • Be aware of the five articles of faith and the five pillars of Islam
  • Have knowledge of how and when worship takes place
  • Have some understanding of the role of women in Islam

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen and paper will be required for note taking. All other materials will be provided.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
