This illustrated talk will cover the life and works of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of the greatest engineers of his age. It will include his family background; Clifton Suspension Bridge; The Great Western Railway, and his three ships – SS Great Western, SS Great Britain and SS Great Eastern. It will explain the social changes to society as a result of the arrival of the GWR. There will be an emphasis on the GWR in the Bath area.

Course aim

To capture the vision of Brunel in his many projects. To understand the resulting changes to society as a result of the arrival of the railways.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline the Brunel Family History.
  • Describe the contribution Brunel made to the development of various engineering projects – bridges, railways & shipbuilding.
  • Recognise the limitations of technology in the early 19th Century and how Brunel overcame these and advanced our knowledge.
  • List the social changes made as a result of the arrival of the GWR.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Handouts will be provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • A list of available books and internet sites will be provided.

  • Reading numerous books published on Brunel. Viewing a number of internet sites devoted to Brunel. Visiting sites associated with Brunel. Guidance on the above will be provided during the day.
