Literature-Romantic Poets

This course will explore a selection of works by canonical and non-canonical authors of the period. Authors studied will include Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelly, Keats and Byron. We will also look at working class or peasant poets John Clare, Robert Bloomfield and female poets from the period Charlotte Smith, Felicia Hemans and Mary Robinson.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to a range of poetry (and some prose) from the Romantic period - generally 1780-1830.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No previous knowledge of the poets or works is required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Think critically about the literary-historical term 'Romanticism'
  • Explore a range of works by canonical poets from the period and less well known poets from the period.
  • Demonstrate understanding of some of the social, cultural and historical contexts influencing and influenced by writing from the period.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of concepts of the period.
  • Formulate my own ideas and responses to a range of Romantic texts.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • A handout of the poems to be studied will be supplied at the start of the first session. Students should bring this handout to all sessions and also pens, paper for note taking.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • The handout supplied at the first meeting will contain all the poems that will be studied. Prior to the course any reading the students can do, of the poets to be studied, will be useful but not essential.
