Creative Writing - Working with Words

Learn new skills and explore your creativity as you write stories, true or untrue. We will be using structured exercises to explore a range of key techniques. The emphasis is on enjoyment and finding your own style. Suitable for beginners and those wishing to develop their skills further. The course will begin with a series of starter exercises designed to create a friendly and positive group environment. This will be followed by exercises that encourage experimentation in form and style and develop a distinctive ‘writing voice’. There will be optional homework tasks, and regular opportunities to discuss writing theory. Sessions will include advice about competitions and other submission opportunities. Sessions will include verbal feedback and advice on marketing opportunities.

To practise key creative writing skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plan and complete a piece of creative writing by following an exercise set by the tutor.
  • Critically evaluate a piece of imaginative writing provided by the tutor.
  • Discuss techniques for hooking a reader into a piece of writing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • There will be an optional homework task set at each session.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen or pencils and writing paper or notebook.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
