Have fun joining in various spoken and written exercises which will help you to engage in polite conversation. Enquire re. local facilities and understand responses; describe weather; know numbers to 50; order drinks and snacks.

Course aim

Speak,read and write essential vocabulary and phrases required for: introductions, seeking information re. a location, weather, numbers to 60, ordering a drink or snack.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Greet others and introduce family/friends, state nationality/job, say farewell
  • Know verbs avoir and être
  • Ask questions and use the negative including weather phrases
  • Describe local facilities in locations using questions, negative
  • Order drinks and snacks

How will I be taught?

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Students will find it helpful to look again at phrases covered in between our sessions. Also, listening to the CD will assist students with pronunciation and with recall of vocabulary covered.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Course book "Voilà - A Course in French for Adult Beginners third edition. Also the two CDs. Try Amazon. A good dictionary e.g. Collins, an A4 loose leaf folder with file paper and transparent wallets to hold handouts.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Students are encouraged to look through the first chapter of the course book. Watching a French film can be helpful.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
