Talk Spanish

Ref: C3528461

This course for post-beginners is designed to build on the Spanish you already know and to help you develop the skills you need to speak and understand Spanish in everyday contexts within a supportive environment. We will also explore aspects of Spanish and Latin American culture, so you will gain a better understanding of issues that concern Spanish-speaking people. Study resources used in the classes are available on line for all students enrolled in the course, as well as tips on language learning and links to useful websites. Although most students who enrol on this course will have some prior knowledge of the language, interested beginners should contact the course leader, Judy Palmer (

Course aim

This course works primarily on developing fluency skills giving you the confidence to communicate in Spanish at a post beginner’s level.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Express your opinion verbally on key topics covered during the course
  • Give a short, prepared talk on a topic of your choice
  • Understand longer written texts and distinguish past or future events
  • Understand the main points of a longer spoken passage

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Suggestions will be made as to how to build on what we cover in class. Many of these will be on line resources, enabling students to work at their own level. Independent study is the key to successful progress when learning a language.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Most students like to jot down vocabulary. Ideas will be given as to how to consolidate your learning between classes. All materials used in the class are saved on Google Docs.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Students with no prior knowledge of Spanish are advised to attend the taster session in June Those with some prior knowledge would benefit from revisiting grammar and vocabulary from previous courses.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • A reading list will be provided to interested students to widen their knowledge of cultural topics covered within the course.
