Poetry and Landscape - the Art of Painting with Words

Ref: C3528460

Do you enjoy admiring views and panoramas? Do you like sunsets and seascapes? We will be exploring a range of wonderful scenes of the countryside, cities, seas, rivers, skies - but all in poetry. Over the course we will identify the skills poets use to bring these word pictures to life.

Course aim

We will read a variety of poems describing different landscapes to explore the skill of painting a scene with words.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Although no experience of poetry analysis is needed, this course is for those who would enjoy discussing previously unseen poetry with others and sharing views.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe 5 ways in which a poet can create a scene using words.
  • Name 6 poets who have written about landscape and name a relevant poem for each.
  • Read 2 poems about the same scene and explain, giving reasons, why one is better than the other.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be small group work with guided questions.

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen and paper. Week 1 poems to be provided by the tutor. Other poems will be be emailed for students to print off; or the tutor can print copies for 10p per sheet - about 50p per week per student.
