An opportunity to be introduced to the style of Foundational Calligraphy. We will analyse how to construct the lower case and capital letters and apply these techniques to produce a finished piece of calligraphy

Course aim

To offer an introduction to the characteristics of Foundational Calligraphy including tools and materials, which is a great style to learn for the beginner. With a view to developing your own hand lettering.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1 Gain knowledge of the history of the Foundational Hand
  • 2 Select appropriate tools and materials for writing Foundational
  • 3 Construct lower case letterforms in Foundational
  • 4 Construct upper case letterforms in Foundational
  • 5 Identify the principles and produce balanced layouts

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
