Cooking for Health and Wellbeing

A friendly and informal cooking course including a mix of Western and Asian dishes to extend your cooking skills. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss the dishes. Throughout the course, the emphasis will be on healthy and economical recipes, from starters, main courses and desserts. You will be given printed copies of the recipes used in each lesson. There will also be a focus on Food Hygiene and how to handle and store cooked and raw foods safely.

Course aim

Improve students' cooking skills through demonstration and participation. Develop students' knowledge of preparation, cooking techniques, and safe storage of raw and cooked food in a friendly inclusive environment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate improved confidence in your cooking skills
  • Explain how to safely store food in your refrigerator and freezer.
  • Follow a recipe.
  • Understand the principles of kitchen hygiene.
  • Improve your food shopping skills and save money.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
