This course is designed for parents with children in Reception. Helping them with subjects the children will learn at school and ways in which the parents can help them. A fun way with taster sessions.

Course aim

Understanding the key principles into your childs education. Learning new ways to help them at home.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is for students who attend a specific centre only. For more information please call 0300 303 3464

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the stages a child goes through in school life
  • Attend a taster science lesson and do an activity that will benefit the parents when the child talks about it . (Solar system)
  • Attend a taster session in maths. Design a tarsia activity to help themselves and their child
  • Attend a taster session in English and learn strategies to help them improve their child's grammar and punctuation
  • Complete a fun outdoor activity with other parents to break learning barriers between themselves and their children.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
