What goes on behind close doors of our local industries ? Could these doors be open to you ? This course aims to provide an exciting new look at the growing numbers of jobs around us that involve science, technology, engineering and maths. If you hated these subjects at school then we promise this time it will be different ! We are working with local companies who are keen to connect with local communities . The course will show you how much you already know and may spark new interests enabling you to benefit from opportunities.

Course aim

To build on students personal development and raise awareness of employability opportunities in science , information technology, research and design.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the type of work that is happening in local industries.
  • Explain the basic principles and practical applications of several Stem projects.
  • Describe the type of work I want to do and ask questions of prospective employers.
  • Identify my work and the learning goals and plan the next steps to meet them.
  • Research local job opportunities that meet my current requirements and circumstances.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Work outside the class is not essential, if you are undertaking work related activity you can do an extension project which build your networks and develop your confidence for interviews.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Apply for STEM related jobs including work experience, placements and apprenticeships.
