Using the computers for Beginners

This course is taught in a friendly environment encouraging all students to develop computer skills. The tutor will encourage your learning through individual and group support to enable you to develop your skills within the areas you find most difficult.

Course aim

To provide students with the basic skills to use a computer and challenge the motivation to succeed the benefits of computer technology.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Log on and off the computer and familiarising yourself with the mouse, keyboard, desktop, as well as conforming to safety when using technology.
  • Familiarise with WORD and identify with the tool bar to change the size of text and styles of text.
  • Use drop down menus to e.g 'SAVE,' and 'PRINT' work.
  • Use the 'spell checker' to check for errors in word processing.
  • Insert pictures using clipart images using 'cut' and 'paste.'

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Whole group and individual teaching will be implemented to asses learning and progress made. Support will be given where more help is need.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Any course work monitoring individual progress will be kept in line with data protection.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring with you an A4 ring binder in which you will be asked to keep your course work.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
