This course will assist you to explore and learn more about the subject areas as well as building your skills in areas such as research, design and your personal confidence. This course will prepare you to progress onto other courses, voluntary work or work experience in the subject areas.

Course aim

Do careers in Science , Technology, Engineering and Maths scare you? This course is an introduction of these subject areas and how we can prepare to go into further study, voluntary work or employment in STEM and build your confidence too.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn what work is available locally in science, technology, engineering & maths.
  • Understand what your skills are and what employers look for (developing your CV).
  • Develop a plan to achieve my goal for progression post course.
  • Learn how subjects (science/technology/engineering/maths) effect us daily.
  • Learn about the history of STEM industries in the locality.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Worksheets will be provided for learners to complete during class time.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring writing equipment.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Progress onto other STEM related courses, voluntary positions or work experience too.
