Discover your creative musical potential! The aim of course is to create and perform music with a guitar. This will be accomplished by developing listening and performance skills, accompanying popular styles and songs, and introducing the core principles of notating/writing music on guitar through tabulature and chord charts

Course aim

To introduce the core key skills of playing a guitar (rhythms, melody and harmony) To increase learners' self-confidence

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Tune a guitar to an electronic tuner
  • Play three major and three minor open chords
  • Play a pentatonic scale
  • Play a rhythm in 4/4 time
  • Read basic guitar notation in the form of tabulature and chord charts

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Please bring your guitar

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
