UNISON Literacy Skills: Putting it on Paper

This course will help you to communicate clearly and confidently in a wide rane of social and formal situations, taking into account the listener(s), purpose and situation. We will develop skills to predict the meaning of a text using vocabulary, grammatical features, and indirect cues. We will summarise information from longer documents and discuss why this is an important skill. You will write for a wide range of everyday and formal situations. You will build on your knowledge of spelling strategies, so you can apply this consistently and systematically to ensure accurate spelling.

Course aim

The course will help you to practise your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in English. It will help you get ready to move onto an higher Level 2 accredited course in future. (City & Guilds Functional English exams).

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is open to Unison members only

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use strategies and prior knowlege to spell the majority of common and unfamiliar words accurately.
  • Select the appropriate level of detail required for a range of writing purposes,e.g. note making, summary of a document, formal letter
  • Make requests and ask questions to obtain informaton in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
  • Take part in a range of formal and informal topical discussions: explain my personl views clearly, listen and respond appropriately, using information about the situation and the speaker.
  • Use grammatcal knowldege and personal experience to identify the purpose and meaning of a range of pieces of wrirting.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will work together with other students and the tutor as well as individulally.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Tutor with give you individual targets/goals after an initial assessment

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • pen, pencil paper, folder, dictionary or note book to write informaton learnt.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • It may be useful if students read for pleasure or information to bring in any of their reading materials.
