This course is intended for people who wish to explore their creativity through art and writing (it is well documented that engagement with creative arts enhances a sense of wellbeing ). Each session will have a focus to act as a starting point to inspire expressive responses.Some sessions will feature a specific artist or writer. A wide range of art materials will be provided and instruction available when necessary. At the end of each session artwork produced will be displayed and students encouraged to read back their writing, for constructive feedback from the tutor and their peers. The tutor will spend individual time during the session to encourage and support full participation.

Course aim

This course offers people opportunities to discover latent talents and explore/develop their creative potential using visual arts combined with some writing exercises.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Contribute to a collective piece of writing.
  • Write a poem and produced an image inspired by the cornish painter Alfred Wallace.
  • Produce a multi media image which includes words.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • All materials will be provided

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Involvement in mainstream/community art activities. Continuing creative pursuits as a hobby.

You can enrol online if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits

  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
