This course is intended for people looking to try new ways to cope with stress,anxiety and recurring depression. It uses focused awareness as a way of anchoring ourselves in the present moment. Students will learn/experience a variety of meditation and mindful activity exercises including, contemplative meditations, breathwork, body scans,the use of mantras, guided visualisations, mindful eating etc Students will begin to explore mindful ways of dealing with negative thoughts and emotions.

Course aim

To provide opportunities to explore how 'mindfulness' can be become part of everyday life. The course helps students understand and experience the benefits of mindfulness techniques as effective ways of managing stress and anxiety.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • People wishing to enrol who have a medical condition like epilepsy, or who are taking certain medications e.g. major tranquillizors should seek medical advice. Please make contact if you need to discuss this prior to the course starting.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate several mindful breathing techniques.e.g 'squared breathing','belly breathing' and 'alternate nostril breathing.'
  • Use a mantra as a meditation focus.
  • use progressive muscle relaxation to facilitate a body scan.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • wear loose comfortable clothing. Bring a folder or handouts

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
