Cushion making for beginners

This course is ideal for people that want to learn how to make different styles of cushions and already have basic sewing skills. An initial envelope cushion will be created to gain confidence of pattern matching and using the sewing machine. Learners will then progress to cushions with zips, piping and decorative edges. Learners will be teacher lead through demonstrations and sampling. Learners will spend time within each session working on their own project applying their new found knowledge.

Course aim

To deliver an insight into cushion making by initially creating an envelope cushion, then apply the knowledge to create stylish cushions with different finishes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate accuracy of pattern matching before cutting out fabric using fabric scissors
  • Recognise how pattern matching leads to a pleasing finish within the finished cushion
  • Choice and execute an appropriate zip technique suitable to end use of cushion
  • Make bias binding, joining and matching stripes ready for making fabric covered piping cord
  • Insert bias binding, without stretching it, to produce an even continuous edge to the cushion

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You need to bring suitable fabric/s and sewing equipment, thread, sewing needles, fabric scissors, tape measure, unpicker etc. There is a range of sewing equipment that can be purchased at the course if required. Sewing machines are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
