Recycle Fabric into fashion projects

This course is ideal for people that want to be creative with what they already have in their wardrobe, or fabric that has yet to be used, by upcycling it to something new and unique. You may have a dress that could be turned into a skirt, a shirt that could become sleeveless and shorter or have scraps of spare fabric that could be turned into a cushion. You can create something new from investing your time, effort and exploring a creative mind-set.

Course aim

To create and make something new from something old. Upcycle your fabrics rather than throwing away and buying something new

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain confidence on the sewing machine
  • Extending creative skills to create something unique
  • Learn how to finish raw edges creatively
  • Use a variety of different stitches and needle on the sewing machine

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring in garment or fabric for own sewing project. Basis sewing equipment, fabric scissors, hand needles, thread, unpicker, tape measure etc. Sewing machine are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
