This course is ideal for people that are advanced in their sewing skills and want to extend their accuracy and repertoire of garment construction. You will learn/apply a variety of construction techniques, personal to your chosen project and aim for a very high level of accuracy and fit. You will build on the skills you have attained to produce a professionally finished garment. Learners will be taught with guidance from the tutor.

Course aim

Draw on a wealth of sewing skills to work on individual projects and extend repertoire of garments to be made.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a high level of confidence on the sewing machine and overlocker
  • Worked on individual project/s, extending skills and applying prior knowledge from previous projects
  • Selected and demonstrated a variety of new construction techniques relevant to chosen project
  • Selected and used a variety of different machine needles and machine feet appropriately

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please fabric and paper pattern for sewing project. Basis sewing equipment, fabric scissors, hand needles, thread, unpicker, tape measure etc. Sewing machines are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
