Patchwork & Quilting advanced

This course is ideal for people that want to learn the art of patchwork and machine quilting. With guidance from your tutor you will create up to five patchwork designs of your choice, these designs will then be recreated many times until you have created a quilt of your required size. You will continue to gain confidence of techniques required to construct accurate patchwork and quilting with a professional finish. All learners will learn about accurate cutting with a cutting mat and rotary cutter, use of 1/4inch seams, pressing to ensure flat seams, seam matching, basting, machine quilting then finally binding the edge of the quilt. Learners will be teacher lead through demonstrations and sampling. Learners will spend time within each session working on their own project applying their new found knowledge.

Course aim

To build on your patchwork and quilting skills to create a quilt using up to five different patchwork designs of your choice.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain further confidence on the sewing machines
  • Design up to five patchwork squares and confidently choose suitable fabrics and colour schemes
  • Recognise how matching seams leads to a pleasing finish within patchwork
  • Explore different ways to create binding for quilt edge
  • Mitre corners of quilt without stretching binding

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring any basic sewing equipment, rotary cutter, cutting board, walking foot and 1/4inch quilting foot if you have them. We have a small amount of equipment that can be used. Bring in fabrics to make quilt.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
