Am opportunity to study pattern cutting , looking at your personal body shape , designing a good well made pattern for you use time and time again for sewing the garment that fits you well . we will be looking at shape and what works for you . Creating a unique well fitted pattern , that can be used time and time again. The course is for beginners to intermediate dressmakers. This is a step away from using commercial patterns. Looking at what works already in your wardrobe , and then creating good patterns to produce more.

Course aim

An introduction into Pattern Cutting fashion garments looking at Body shape. What shape suits you ? Sorting out a style that you can create a unique personal sized pattern for you to crate your own well fitted garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Define the body shape , with the construction of a pattern for basic body shapes to start with , for example the basic bodice
  • Select other patterns that will cover some of your personal choice of design in your wardrobe
  • Construct dresses, trousers, skirts , and simple tops that can be combined with your choice of wardrobe designs.
  • Analyse the use of measurement of the body , how we use all the complex measurements in pattern cutting
  • Construct new garments that fit you well

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • you will need basic sewing items and material to complete toiles from the paper patterns that you create

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
