Dress making ,sewing course for beginners and intermediate levels of sewers. the course will look at Body shape and how we can adjust commercial patterns to suit your body shape for good a good style that suits you as an individual . Looking at style rather than current lead fashion shapes from the high street. Each week we will be looking at different commercial patterns that can be used for all students . Demonstrations on how to adjust and fit commercial patterns and maybe your current wardrobe .

Course aim

Introduction to looking at body shape for making your own clothes to fit and look balanced for your shape and height, Sewing garments that fit well.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify how the body shape works in dressmaking, by a demonstration of Draping on the Stand , by all students using the bodice shape as an example
  • Describe the basic fitting process needed for the body in bust, waist and hip measurements, using a dress form in the class , then practise measurement on each other
  • Recognise how to adjust the paper patterns from the commercial pattern companies to fit your own unique shape, evaluate the difference with you own body measurements to the commercial chart on the pattern provided
  • Explore a variety of ways to change your personal wardrobe, to adjust garments that you already own that may not fit well anymore

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • need to bring fabric and sewing basic items

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • maybe look at a commercial garment sewing dressmaking pattern of your choice to start with

  • you may want to take an accredited course in this subject with OCN or City & Guilds EXAM board
