An introduction to some of the commonly used Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Internet Explorer depending on your needs.

Course aim

To develop new and improve on existing computer skills using a range of Microsoft Office programs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use the keyboard and mouse to enter instructions and text competently
  • Use the Start menu to locate specific programs, files and folders
  • Create documents and save them to specific folders and be able to find them again
  • Recognize and follow basic health and safety procedures when using computers
  • Create a series of folders to save your work into independently

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Glasses if you need them to read or use a computer and a pen is always helpful

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Use the skills learnt in a volunteering capacity with a local charity. Progress onto an IT or Business Administration qualification course
