This course is for anyone who wants to improve their health and well-being. The exercises are gentle and can be carried out seated or standing . Participants can learn Tai Chi and Qigong exercises which can improve posture, balance co-ordination and general wellbeing . Learning about Tai Chi principles such as weight transference and situation awareness can help to prevent falls. Students can learn about aspects of Chinese culture and festivals such as Chinese New Year. Participants can share experiences and knowledge and pursue their areas of interest. Past examples include colouring in Chinese Mandalas , food , Chinese horoscopes ,Chinese hand-writing and philosophy .

Course aim

To give an introduction to Tai Chi and Qigong and to practice the exercise safely . To improve health and fitness ,aid balance and coordination,reduce the risk of falls. To explore aspects of Chinese Culture. To have fun learning something new!

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To perform three or more Tai Chi exercises safely
  • List three or more ways to reduce the risk of falling
  • Be aware of aspects of Chinese culture and tradition.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Flat comfortable footwear e.g. trainers Comfortable loose clothing pen

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
