Getting Ready to Speak

The course will give students the opportunity to speak English in a range of situations & feel more confident when doing so. These situations could include role plays to give or ask for information from a child's school, the local council, community centre or to discuss everyday topics with classmates. Students will also be able to improve their listening skills by listening to various conversations to identify the main points or specific information which will be really useful in their everyday life.

Course aim

To help students improve their confidence when speaking in English so that they can give and receive information and engage in discussions on everyday topics.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Follow a short discussion on a familiar topic , for example a phone call from your child's school.
  • Use everyday phrases to clarify and check information.
  • Find general & particular information in a short listening task.
  • Identify how to pronounce 5 everyday words correctly each week.
  • Feel more confident speaking in English

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • This course will prepare you and give you confidence to take the next step which is to start a speaking course where you can take a speaking exam.

You can if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits

  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2017
