Drawing & Painting Improvers

The course will start with observational drawing from life, enabling students to accurately create 2D images of 3D objects. We will also look at using pastels to create portraits. There will be an opportunity to revise some 'back to basics' techniques such as how to use brushes properly and watercolour painting techniques including how to create a snow scene and how to paint flowers and foliage. Students will be expected to research between classes via the internet, library or art books or magazines.

Course aim

To revise a range of drawing and painting techniques as well as some new techniques with the aim of producing a number of finished pieces of artwork

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Accurately draw a 2D image of a 3D object
  • Research portrait artists to inform section on creating portraits in pastels
  • Demonstrate competent brush technique in watercolour
  • Complete a watercolour snow scene
  • Accurately depict flowers and foliage in paint

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Aprons and gloves will be made available but please wear clothes that you don't mind getting paint on

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
