Soft Furnishings - Beginners

Soft furnishing covers a wide range of different products. Initially you will start with an envelope or zipped cushion to gain confidence on the sewing machine. You will then create decorative cushions of your choice using i.e piped edge, gathers, applique, fringing, buttons, inserting an invisible zip etc.

Course aim

To learn about soft furnishing techniques, then apply the knowledge to create stylish soft furnishing products of your choice.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a sewing machine confidently
  • Make a paper pattern for a cushion to the size of your choice
  • Create an envelope or zipped cushion
  • Develop practical knowledge of different edging and/or decorative techniques
  • Learn how to insert an invisible zip

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Basic sewing equipment will be provided. Please bring in 1mt of suitable material to make your first cushion.
