Each session will be themed to act as a starting point. Some sessions will introduce and be inspired by a featured artist.There will be individual instruction available for students when appropriate on composition, use of colour, perspective etc. If a student comes with their own idea/starting point this will be encouraged too. Students will learn how to use several different art mediums to good effect. Students will be encouraged to display their artwork in the'Gallery' at the end of the session where they will receive constructive feedback from the tutor and their peers.

Course aim

To provide students with opportunities to explore a variety of art materials e.g. acrylic paint, water colours, pastels, pencils, charcoal etc. To enable students to develop their own artistic style in a relaxed non judgmental setting.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name and demonstrate two different shading techniques in a still life drawing exercise.
  • Produce an image which demonstrates their understanding of complementary colours.
  • Produce a multi media piece of work combining several different art mediums.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • Wear an apron or old shirt to protect clothing.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • An interest and enthusiasm for Art.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
