Intermediate Dress Making

We will cover a range of sewing techniques , and you will be able to work on your individual project , using a commercial pattern of your choice, which must be purchased by the learner . You will need to have this with you on the first session . You can use the sessions to cover extra sewing skills , by way of sample sewing and toile sewing to check shape and fit of the commercial pattern first. Advice on fabrics and other sewing notions will also be part of the course.

Course aim

Stage 2 of Dressmaking for the improver . The sessions will include sewing sample techniques to aid your individual dressmaking projects. we will cover using the overlocker for more professional finishes to your garment making .

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain a better understanding of a commercial garment pattern
  • Understand the importance of a toile fit first, using the commercial pattern of your choice
  • Produce a well fiitted garment
  • Learn sewing sample techniques , adding value to the sewing project
  • Understand all the instructions and fabric suggestions and terminology of the commercial pattern world

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Students will need a commercial garment pattern for either a dress , skirt. trousers or jacket , these can be purchased online

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
