Intermediate Pattern Cutting

Stage 2 of pattern cutting , using personal body measurements to create garment shapes in either a dress, skirt , trouser or jacket. You will use your own body shape measurements to create a drawn pattern using pattern cutting techniques from the Winifred Aldrich pattern cutting book. You will take the choice of pattern to toile fit stage in calico fabric, and may get to the construction stage in the fabric of your choice.

Course aim

Introduction into stage 2 of pattern cutting, drawing the block shapes of either a dress, skirt, trouser or jacket from your personal body measurements .

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create a pattern block and working pattern in either a dress, skirt, trouser or jacket
  • Create a made toile to first fitting stage, out of fabric in either a dress. skirt. trouser or jacket
  • Complete all the fitting stages from the made item of clothing to personal fit
  • Adjust the pattern blocks and patterns now to use to complete a garment of choice
  • Cut out a garment shape of choice ready for fitting

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • You might wish to look at one of the Winifred Aldrich books on metric pattern cutting, which is the reference we will be using on this course.
