Christmas and Winter Poetry

Ref: C3125690

This taster session will be a celebration of the poetry of Christmas and winter. If you enjoy reading poetry but would like to get more out of it and perhaps discover new lands then this morning session is for you. From familiar Victorian poetry and contemporary responses to the wilder shores of Russia and America, we shall be reading and discussing poetry together. No previous experience is required except for a love of poetry. Coffee and mince pies included.

Course aim

This taster session will touch on some of the basic elements in reading poetry that we enjoy and that celebrate diverse reactions to Christmas and winter.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Anyone with a love of reading poetry will be welcome.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify several poets who write about Christmas and winter
  • identify different responses to Christmas and winter in poetry
  • identify poetry from different countries and cultures

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • This is a morning session and it is hoped that learners will leave inspired to join more such sessions.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing required for this session apart from an enthusiasm for reading poetry. PLEASE NOTE: There is no fee waiver with this course.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • It would be great if learners could re-read some favourite seasonal poems.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • It is hoped that a course of 'reading poetry for pleasure', where learners get more involved with the delivery of the material, will be offered in 2018.
