Making Basic Cloth Bags

With plastic bags becoming a thing of the past why not try your hand at making your own fabric bag. A variety of fabric bag ideas will be explores i.e tote bag, drawstring bag, small gift bags, wine bottle gift bag, gift tag to personalise your bag etc. Maybe you have an idea and just need the guidance to help bring your idea to fruition. Learners will be teacher lead through demonstrations and sampling and spend time within each session working on their own project applying their new found knowledge.

Course aim

An introduction to making small fabric tote bags and as sewing and technical skills improve so will the complexity of the bag construction.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Design and make a paper pattern for a variety of fabric bags and use the correct paper pattern markings/symbols
  • Select suitable fabrics with fabric properties and characteristics suitable for the fabric bags end use.
  • Recognise how matching seams leads to a pleasing finish within bag making
  • Use a variety of fastenings to secure pocket and/or bag
  • Create some pockets that are sized by taking into consideration end use of bag

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You need to bring suitable fabric/s and sewing equipment, thread, sewing needles, fabric scissors, tape measure etc. A range of sewing equipment that can be purchased at the course if required. Sewing machines are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
