Basic Dress Making

This course is ideal for people that want to advance their basis sewing skills and learn techniques to extend their accuracy and repertoire of garment construction. All learners will learn, for example, construction of seams suitable for appropriate fabrics, bound buttonholes, continuous strips and creating a cuffs, collar making, welted pocket etc. Learners will be teacher lead to create practical samples and build a portfolio of work for reference. Learners can also spend some time within each session working on their own garments applying their new found knowledge from taught sessions with guidance from the tutor.

Course aim

Basic sewers to advance their sewing skills and learn new techniques to then apply and extend their repertoire of garments to be made.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify which seam is suitable to which fabric and end use and apply this knowledge
  • Create a bound buttonhole and understand how this technique can be applied to a welted pocket
  • Have developed a good level of accuracy and presentation skills
  • Gather and produce a portfolio of samples for further reference
  • Critically evaluate samples and identify ways to improve

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • You need to bring basic sewing equipment, thread, sewing needles, fabric scissors etc. There is a range of basic sewing equipment that can be purchased at the course if required. Sewing machines are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
