Do you want to improve on your sewing skills and improve a storage issue at the same time? Then why not sign up and make a 'Themed Wall-hanging' of your choice. You will design your wall-hanging and make a paper pattern, then under the guidance of your tutor create your wall-hanging incorporating a variety of pockets, tabs and decorative techniques. The finished wall-hanging will be totally unique to you and suitable for your own end use. With Christmas looming why not make an advent calendar wall-hanging ready for all the little daily gifts in December?

Course aim

To design and create a themed wall-hanging that incorporates a variety of pockets to suit its final end use of learner choice.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Design and make a paper pattern for a wall-hanging and use the correct paper pattern markings/symbols
  • Select suitable fabrics with fabric properties and characteristics suitable for the wall-hangings end use.
  • Create a variety of pockets that are sized by taking into consideration end use of wall-hanging
  • Create tabs or a unique way of hanging the wall-hanging
  • Use decorative techniques and variety of shapes that demonstrate and reflects the chosen theme.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You need to bring suitable fabric/s and sewing equipment, thread, sewing needles, fabric scissors, tape measure etc. A range of sewing equipment that can be purchased at the course if required. Sewing machines are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
