Patchworking and Quilting

This course is ideal for people that want to learn the art of patchwork and machine quilting. An initial small project will be created to gain confidence of techniques required to construct accurate patchwork and quilting with a professional finish. All learners will learn about accurate cutting with a cutting mat and rotary cutter, use of 1/4inch seams, pressing to ensure flat seams, seam matching, basting, machine quilting then finally binding the edge of the quilt. Learners will be teacher lead through demonstrations and sampling. Learners will spend time within each session working on their own project applying their new found knowledge.

Course aim

To deliver an insight into patchwork and quilting by creating an initial small patchwork projects, then apply knowledge to, over time, start creating a small patchwork lap quilt.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate accuracy in cutting out fabric through the use of a cutting mat and rotary cutter.
  • Understand pressing patchwork to avoid stretching
  • Recognise how matching seams leads to a pleasing finish within patchwork
  • Select the most appropriate machine quilting pattern for your quilt
  • Mitre corners of quilt without stretching binding

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Bring basic sewing equipment, thread, sewing needles, fabric scissors etc. Patchwork equipment - Cutting mat, rotary cutter and patchwork ruler A range of basic sewing equipment can be purchased at the course. Sewing machines are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
