Basic sewing

Enjoy gaining the skills to make your own garments , that will be a personal fit to you. You will have the opportunity to use a variety of sewing machines and equipment . We will be using commercial dressmaking patterns to create your choice of garment. This is a beginners class , that will lead onto the next level in the Spring. you will need to bring your own fabric and sewing items , But all sewing machines are provided in class.

Course aim

An Introduction to Dressmaking using commercial patterns for beginners to sewing garments . Using a sewing machine and learning all the techniques to making your own clothes to fit.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand how a commercial pattern is used in dressmaking
  • use a variety of sewing machines
  • have a garment that fits you well to your own personal measurements
  • Be confident with changes to commercial patterns for a better fit of the garment
  • have more skills in basic dressmaking , to possible go onto the next level in the spring term

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Weekly tutor demonstrations of techniques with handouts to practise at home will be covered.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • you will need to bring fabric of your choice and the pattern you want to use to create your garment , this will be discussed at the first session , and samples will be at the first session for you to look at , with internet research help aswell.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • look at fabric and commercial dressmaking patterns on the internet and in local haberdashery shops

  • Progress to another WEA course
