Art for Absolute Beginners

'I wish I could draw!' Have you ever said this? Just like learning to ride a bike or make a cake, everyone can learn the techniques and tricks of drawing and painting, with the help of an experienced and friendly tutor. This course will start right at the very beginning and give you the skills and confidence to start to make some artwork. You will have the opportunity to try different media and materials and to have fun in a supportive environment with other people who feel the same way as you. Who knows, by the end of it you may be well on your way to becoming an artist!

Students must be over 50 and Telford & Wrekin residents. Students can only do ONE free WEA course

Course aim

This course is for people who feel they have little skill in drawing and painting. It will start at the very beginning and offer techniques and tricks to start people on their way to becoming artists

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a grid to copy an image
  • Use shading to create form and depth
  • Accurately mix at least two colours

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Please bring an apron or wear old clothes

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
