Writers' Circle

This course is for people who want to discover/develop their potential as writers in a non judgmental setting. It is intended to help students grow in confidence about sharing their writing and reading it aloud.Each session will have a different starting point/theme.e.g.flash fiction, plays, fairy tales or a featured poet or writer which will initiate a writing exercise. Students will be encouraged to read their work back to the group to receive constructive feedback from the tutor and their peers.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to different writing genres and themes which inspire and enable students to generate/develop their own creative writing practice.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write a response to different writing genres/starting points.
  • Be familiar with some of the work of the featured writers.
  • Carry on developing my own writing practice
  • Read back/perform my own work with more confidence.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Note book and pen. Folder for handouts.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Nothing specific, an interest in literature.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Enter a writing competition. Attend/perform at spoken word/open mic event.
