Confidence & Introduction to Assertiveness

The course is aimed at people who lack self confidence and self esteem and for those who struggle to be assertive in daily life situations. It will look at the importance of improving self esteem and self worth to be able to choose when it is appropriate to be assertive. Through discussion, looking at scenarions, groupwork, role play learners will be able to develop practical strategies for confidence.

Course aim

The course will enable learners to develop strategies to improve their confidence and assertiveness in daily life situations. Learners will learn about the link between confidence, self esteem and their right to be assertive.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify 1 reason why positive self esteem is important for confident and assertive behaviour
  • Identify 2 ways to develop positive thinking for confident and assertive behaviour.
  • Identify 2 ways to improve confident and assertive behaviour in 1 personal situation.
  • Identify 1 benefit of choosing to be assertive in a personal situation
  • Identify 1 drawback of choosing to be assertive.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A folder and a notepad.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
