Community Gym - Men

This health education programme aims to develop an individuals knowledge surrounding the benefits of undertaking regular physical activity. These weekly sessions will consist of a 40-50 minute practical exercise class that will help to increase a participants confidence of using a variety of cardiovascular and muscular strengthening exercise machines. As part of this students will also complete a short theory session discussing areas such as, activity guidelines, the benefits of physical activity and ways to overcome barriers to exercise.

Course aim

This course aims to support the development of an individuals knowledge surrounding the benefits of undertaking regular physical activity, through practical and theory sessions.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to name 3 physical and psychological benefits from undertaking physical activity.
  • Have an understanding of how physical activity can help manage health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • Be able to complete a full gym circuit using all machines safely with the correct technique.
  • Be able to demonstrate at least 2 stretches within the cool-down to other learners.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Participants will need to bring a drink to the session and will have to wear clothing they feel comfortable to exercise in.
