Tai Chi for Health and Wellbeing

This course is designed to help anyone who wants to improve their health and wellbeing making it possible to stay active. The exercises are gentle and can be carried out seated or standing. Participants can learn Tai Chi and Qigong exercises which can help improve posture , balance , coordination and general wellbeing. Learning about Tai Chi principles such as weight transference and situation awareness can also help in preventing falls.

Course aim

To give an introduction to Tai Chi and Qigong and to practice the exercise safely . To improve health and fitness ,aid balance and coordination,reduce the risk of falls. To investigate ways of eating more healthily

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This 'Get Out Stay Well' course is for people that have been recently discharged from hospital or use out patient services for a health condition or injury.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Perform three (more) Tai Chi exercises safely
  • List three more ways to prevent falls
  • List five ways to reduce sugar.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Pens . Comfortable clothing . Flat supportive shoes or trainers. Inhalers or any supports that you need.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
