English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)- First steps

The course will help learners to develop their confidence in English. They will practise filling in forms, making phone calls, reading signs and maps, writing notes and instructions. They will also learn the vocabulary to help in everyday activities such as going to the doctor, shopping, applying for jobs and helping children with homework.

Course aim

Pre Entry English (ESOL) course is for people who are beginners in the English language. Learners will develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening and will begin to develop the knowledge and skills needed for everyday life.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases
  • Communicate in a simple way in familiar contexts with people who speak slowly and clearly
  • Write the letters of the alphabet and construct a very simple sentence
  • Read simple words and sentences
  • Spell your name, address and other key words about your personal details correctly

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Pen, pencil, note pad and a folder.
