The Story of British Towns

There will be six sessions each comprising an illustrated talk designed to promote discussion and interest in individual research and awareness of the urban environment. We will explore the nature, functions and structure of towns and will use a wide variety of examples to show how they have evolved through time. We will examine the development of town planning through the ages and will consider the changes taking place at the present time.

Course aim

To explore and understand the nature and development of British towns, where 80% of British people live

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The course is for a general audience with an interest in the urban environment

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand what a town and how it fits into patterns of human settlement
  • Say where why and how towns develop
  • know the various areas of towns ,both in terms of age and function
  • understand how British towns developed throughout history, including the development of town planning
  • consider the present-day developments in British towns and possibly their future

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • We will discuss the points raised in the sessions, and there will be a reading list and suggestions for visits to enable students to pursue the subject individually

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • There will be a follow-up reading list and suggestions for places you may wish to visit to take you further
