The course is for all adults, regardless of age, fitness levels, capabilities and experience. Exercise routines, varied to suit learners` varying levels of fitness, goals, capabilities and preferences are tailored to each course. Education is included for 30 minutes in each 90 minute lesson, designed to broaden learners` knowledge of health and fitness. Learners will work towards achieving learning outcomes, specific to the topic for the term. Learners will also get a chance to set goals to achieve their own personal goals.

Course aim

The course is designed to gradually increase learners fitness levels, and to increase knowledge of the health benefits of becoming fitter and healthier, through exercise instruction and education.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • The course topic will be based around COPD. Students will learn about COPD and be able to define the term.
  • Students will be able to list 3 causes of COPD
  • Students will be able to identify 4 symptoms of COPD
  • As well as seeing an improvement in their own fitness levels, students will also set their own individual learning outcomes, set goals and strive, with support from the tutor, to achieve these goals.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Progress of your own individual goal will be monitored/ recorded throughout the course to check you are on track. Start and final recordings will be carried out, to show progress has been made.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear for exercising. Bring a drink with you. A plastic folder for you to keep your paperwork clean and tidy. Also a pen. Be punctual at all times. Have fun!

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
