Beginners Health and Fitness

Health education programme consisting of a variety of exercises and health talks. A 40 - 50mins fitness session to improve fitness, agility, stamina, coordination and confidence; reinforced by a short discussion on a variety of health topics that reflect the health issues in the group.

Course aim

To improve learners understanding of Health and Fitness and how both physical health and mental well-being can can work together to allow for positive changes and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To be able to state 3 adverse effects of high cholesterol in the body and how to maintain low cholesterol level in the body.
  • To be able to understand the quantity of salt in food and the level of salt to take in their food.
  • To be able to mention the 3 food groups and 2 benefits of having each food group in their diet.
  • To name 3 benefits of introducing nuts into daily diets and its functions on the body

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Students should wear appropriate clothing for sessions, clothes that will not restrict movement.For example tracksuit bottom, loose shirt & trainers. Aso to bring a bottle of water and a flannel.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
