A Beginners' Introduction to Handwriting 1550-1700

This course, led by Dr Charlotte Berry, will explore the history of handwriting between 1550-1700, as well as covering key skills and strategies in tackling original texts from this period. Practical hands-on sessions are included which will give you the opportunity to start reading example texts. This course follows on from the Introduction to Paleography spring workshop.

Course aim

To provide an overview of the styles of script used in a range of historical document types.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain an appreciation of historical handwriting from the period
  • Develop strategies in tackling original texts
  • The ability to start reading example texts

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a notebook and pen
